People come and go from hospitals every day. While time spent there is generally not most people’s idea of a happy time, you are likely to feel more at home and more comfortable if you tote some of your own personal belongings with you.
When staying at hospitals, whether it be just overnight, for a few days or for a longer visit, you want to make sure that you have the right legal documents on hand. These are important to have when you are admitted. You will be asked by staff to provide your identification card or driver’s license, your health insurance card and in some instances, a copy of your power of attorney, living will, or advance directive (if the situation applies).
Hospitals need to know what medications their patients are taking when they are admitted for surgery or treatment. This is something that is often forgotten or overlooked. Bring a complete list with you. If you need the medication during your stay, make sure you pack them in your bag or purse.
On your packing list include the names of all of the medications you are presently taking, the dosage of each, and the frequency with which you take each one. You also should make a note about when the last dose of each one was taken. This will help you to remain on schedule with your medication.
Hospitals need to have up-to-date contact information for their records. Provide the medical facility with a list of important telephone numbers for family members and close friends. This will ensure that if an emergency takes place, those who should be notified in your life will receive a phone call. Make sure that you provide complete names and telephone numbers for everyone on your list. For those who live in another city or state, remember to include area codes.
It is best to leave your valuables at home, such as jewellery. It is also a good idea to leave any of your credit cards at home for safe keeping. However, you may wish to have a small amount of money on hand when you are staying in a healthcare setting. You may want to go to the gift shop or pharmacy in the building and buy a magazine, newspaper or a personal care item such as shampoo or body wash. If you are worried about theft, keep your cash in an inconspicuous spot, such as in a sock or hat hidden away in a drawer in your room.
Hospitals offer gowns to their patients to wear but if you are like most people, you would much prefer your own comfortable clothes. Before you arrive for your stay, remember to pack your pajamas, nightshirt or nightgown, underwear, socks, a robe and a pair of slippers. Loose clothing is preferable for your stay. Not only is loose clothing more comfortable, but if you need to wear a heart monitor or some other type of apparatus, you will want your garments to not be tight and constrictive.
